P.M.H. Atwater's Near-Death Experience Research

P.M.H. Atwater photoP. M. H. Atwater, L.H.D., Ph.D. (Hon) (pmhatwater.hypermart.net and www.amazon.com) is one of the original researchers in the field of near-death studies, having begun her work in 1978. Visit Atwater's Q & A Blog and her NDE News Blog. Sign up for her free online newsletter. P.M.H. Atwater is one of the very few top NDE researchers who have actually had an NDE. Her website is filled with very interesting NDE research information and articles of hers. Her contribution to near-death studies is considered to be one of the most important as her first two books,, Beyond the Light (2009) and Coming Back to Life (2008),are deemed the Bibles of the near-death experience by researchers and a multitude of experiencers and enthusiasts. Using her firm understanding of police investigative techniques as a protocol, she has specialized in original fieldwork and research that also included sessions with significant others. Her findings are contained in her books. Some of her findings have now been clinically verified. Her research is referenced in the distinguished Lancet medical journal, December 15, 2001 (the landmark Dutch study by Pim van Lommel, M.D.). She is the author of many more wonderful books including: The Forever Angels (2019), The Animal Lights Series of Children's Books (2019), A Manual for Developing Humans (2017), The Big Book of NDEs (2014), Dying to Know You (2014), Future Memory (2013), Children of the Fifth World (2012), NDEs, The Rest of the Story (2011), I Died Three Times in 1977 (2011), Beyond the Indigo Children (2005), We Live Forever (2004), The New Children and NDEs (2003), Children of the New Millennium (1999), and Goddess Runes (1996).

 1. The Essential Works of P.M.H. Atwater
The Forever Angels
The Forever Angels: NDEs in Childhood and Their Lifelong Impact (2019)

This book is the product of P.M.H. Atwater's major study of near-death experiences with the newly born, babies, toddlers, and children up to age five. Atwater reveals how those who experience a near-death state or other worlds at a very young age are profoundly affected for the rest of heir lives. Drawing on interviews with nearly 400 childhood experiencers, both the young and fully matured, Atwater shows how in contrast to adult experiencers, child and infant experiencers cannot compare "before" with "after" because they do not have a "before." Examining their memories of the womb, birth, a "mature" childhood, she reveals how the memory of the life-continuum never fades, nor does the desire to go back. Special chapters cover PTSD vs. NDES, Markers, and Historical Cases. There is praise for P.M.H. Atwater's book by leading NDE researchers: According to Bruce Greyson, M.D., the Carlson Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, at the University of Virginia Health System, "In this novel approach, Atwater interviewed hundreds of people before and near the end of life who recalled having had an NDE in their first years of life. This strategy gives us an unprecedented 'long view' of how NDEs influence these children over the entire course of their lives. There is no other book like this, nor is there likely to be one." Also available in Kindle eBook Edition and Audiobook Edition.

Animal Lights Series
Animal Lights Series (2019)

This series of children's books is an outgrowth of The Forever Angels, a book of new findings about the very young that will affect the entire field of near-death studies. So many children remember their birth, some being in the womb, that it is now time for this type of book to help both parents and children. Animal Lights are six children’s books about animal babies who remember being in the light, being conceived, living in their mommy’s "pocket place" (womb), and being born. Available only through Amazon.com, either as a paperback or Kindle ebook; all six as single books/ebooks or all together as a single volume. Their stories are about problems and having fun, about nearly dying, and about handicaps. They’re all about "coming into this world from the spirit world." The purpose of the six children’s books is to enable parents to have something fun to do with their children, to help kids remember their own time in their mother’s womb, remember birth, and discover the words to talk about this, words to talk about anything they might want to talk about. For instance, parents might ask their child, "Do you have any memories like Busy Betty Wiggles?" Volume 1: Busy Betty Wiggles (book / ebook) is about a monkey baby who loves to wiggle and see light. Volume 2: Winnie Rolls Around (book, ebook) is about a horse baby who learns how to handle a handicap. Volume 3: Oops A Baby (book, ebook) is about a skunk baby who has a big tail and learns how to accept it. Volume 4: Tommy Two Toes (book, ebook) is about a fawn baby taught to walk by his miscarried twin. Volume 5: Wee Willy Kins (book, ebook) is about a very small hedgehog baby who learns self-acceptance. Volume 6: Sally Suzy Q (book, ebook) is about a kitten who almost suffocates but is saved by angels. Volume 7: Animal Lights Series (book, ebook) containing all Volumes, 1 through 6.

A Manual for Developing Humans
A Manual for Developing Humans (2017)

A Guide to Living for This Life and Beyond, this is the third book P.M.H. Atwater was told to write during her third near-death experience. Based entirely on threes, there are no chapters -- only the development of conscious, subconscious, and superconscious aspects to each topic -- every topic – this book contains the basics on every level of life -- from how to use your mind, develop and use intuition, understand color, sex, relationships, children, how to take out-of-body trips, interact with spirit beings, meditate, bend time, and rethink money. Aliveness jumps from every page -- of soil, rocks, mountains, vegetation, the air we breathe, our planet, our solar system, our universe -- even electricity and energy itself, along with The Void (the ultimate cradle of creation). Each of six main parts is separated by thoughtform drawings done by the author. Filled with what she has learned from 80 years of living. Many surprises. There is also praise for P.M.H. Atwater's book. According to Barry Eaton, broadcaster and author of Afterlife and No Goodbyes: "I have read many thousands of books in my lifetime, and interviewed hundreds of authors. However, A Manual for Developing Humans is one of the most absorbing and important books I have ever read. I was informed, fascinated, and uplifted by its huge range of topics. When I finished reading this wonderful book I just wanted to go back and read it again. Brilliant!”Also available in Kindle eBook Edition.

The Big Book of NDEs
The Big Book of NDEs: The Ultimate Guide to the NDE and Its Aftereffects (2014)

This 450-page book covers every aspect of the near-death phenomenon: the experience, the aftereffects, the implications. It is written in an easy-to-read format for busy people on the go - drawings, cartoons by Spirit Painter and Chuck Vadun, lots of sidebars, snappy headers - with the latest and best in the field. The Sourcebook takes near-death studies from the early days of the "Moody Miracle," through the myths of "the light at the end of the tunnel" and "the religion of the resuscitated," to where it is after 32 years of work. . . with clinical prospective studies in several countries verifying the reality of the experience and its many aspects, and establishing its importance in the study of consciousness itself! There is also praise for P.M.H. Atwater's book. According to the late Robert L. Van de Castle, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of University of Virginia; and author of Our Dreaming Mind: "This book’s clarity of writing style and amazing collection of mind-bending accounts of extraordinary experiences makes for riveting reading." Also available in Kindle eBook Edition.

Dying to Know You
Dying to Know You: Proof of God in the Near-Death Experience (2014)

P.M.H. Atwater calls this book "The People’s Book," as it contains a summary of over 4,000 adult and child near-death experiencers -- their wisdom, their words, their story. There is no other book like it in the world. The people's book: a collective of what thousands saw, heard, felt, and suddenly, absolutely, knew. It is nothing less than proof that everyone on planet Earth, in their own heart, seeks to have: that God exists. They describe a God that in ways is beyond description, a Source, an all-encompassing Oneness. Perhaps it makes sense that so many who share the same experience are getting to the core of the world’s longing for the truth about God. Dying To Know You will shake your beliefs about humanity’s relationship to the nature of God and the universe in which we live. There is also praise for P.M.H. Atwater's book. According to Sidney Kirkpatrick, award-winning documentary filmmaker and best-selling author, "Atwater makes a compelling case for the existence of God, going where few researchers have gone before: meeting God while in the midst of a near-death experience. Her many insights into the realm beyond, and those of others whom she has interviewed, provide what may well be a picture window into a soul’s journey back to its maker. Her writing is clear, her reporting thorough, her arguments crisp, her message compelling. Life has value, life has reason, life has meaning." Also available in Kindle eBook Edition.

Future Memory
Future Memory (2013)

There are different paths to future memory. P.M.H. Atwater says the future memory allows people to "live" life in advance and remember the experience in detail when something triggers that memory. Atwater says the unifying, and permanent, effect of that experience is a brain a "brain shift" which she believes "may be at the very core of existence itself." In Future Memory, Atwater shows that structural and chemical changes are occurring in our brains, changes indicative of higher evolutionary development. In January of 2013, an announcement was made of a scientific study that verified the premise of future memory. Unbeknownst to the author, that scientific study was originally inspired by an earlier edition of her book, "Future Memory." There is praise for P.M.H. Atwater's book: "This is a book whose time is appropriate for the close of the century and for the type of consciousness exploration we are involved in today. As we continue to be receptive to and involved in the unfoldment of quantum physics we see more clearly that consciousness is the foundation of what we know and perceive." -- International Association for Near-Death Studies, Vital Signs Magazine. Also available in Kindle eBook Edition.

Children of the Fifth World
Children of the Fifth World: A Guide to the Coming Changes in Human Consciousness (2012)

Connecting recent events and cultural shifts with creation myths, evolutionary calendars, and historical records from every culture as well as predictions by Teilhard de Chardin, Sri Aurobindo, Edgar Cayce, and other visionary seers, Atwater shows how the genetic shift now occurring follows the "Rule of Thirds" in its progression. Exploring timelines for the next several hundred years, she explains that the coming new world will be tailored specifically for the new kids, who will lead the way in the Great Shift from old world to new. There is praise for P.M.H. Atwater's book: "If you believe that major changes are coming and the children coming into the world are harbingers of those changes -- and this has antecedents reaching back thousands of years -- then once you pick up this book you won’t put it down. I suggest you be careful when you pick it up, because your thinking, and your world, will never be the same." -- Ervin Laszlo, founder of The Club of Budapest Think Tank, author of more than 80 books, and two-time nominee for The Nobel Peace Prize. Also available in Kindle eBook Edition.

NDEs, The Rest of the Story
NDEs, The Rest of the Story: What They Teach Us About Living, Dying, and Our True Purpose (2011)

Out-of-body experiences, encountering a special light, greeters from the afterlife, life reviews, tunnels, and 360-degree vision - are all part of P.M.H. Atwater's intriguing look at NDEs by one of the world's noted authorities. Atwater shares her amazing findings, based on her sessions with more than 4,000 adults and children, and over 40 years of research; a breathtaking culmination to a successful and controversial career. There is praise for P.M.H. Atwater's book: "This book is an absolute must for anyone interested in how NDEs relate to the transformation of consciousness, spiritual awakening, and our true potential and that of the world ... Destined to become a classic in near-death studies and consciousness research, it has my highest recommendation." -- Scott A. Olsen, Ph.D., author of award-winning The Golden Section. Also available in Kindle eBook Edition and in Audible Audioobook Edition.

I Died Three Times in 1977
I Died Three Times in 1977 -- The Complete Story (2011)

According to Bruce Greyson, M.D., UVA Former Editor, Journal of Near-Death Studies, "Atwater's is the most honest book about near-death experiences I have ever read. It is brutally honest with P.M.H. Atwater, laying bare her soul. And it is equally honest with the reader, laying out Atwater's remarkable experiences and equally remarkable aftereffects without any hidden agenda. This latest book by one of the most prolific authors on NDEs is not a memoir, not a scientific study, not a religious treatise, but may be best described as a work of love. Whether or not you feel this book helps you understand NDEs intellectually, "from the outside in," it will undoubtedly help you to understand what it feels like from the inside out." Some comments from the Forward to this book made by Pim van Lommel, M.D., head of the prospective study of near-death experiences in Holland: "By doing all the research about near-death experiences that she did, and by writing about it, she was a great help for breaking the taboo about the subject, not only for those who were confronted with someone who was trying to describe his/her experience, like physicians, nurses, but also family members and friends. She especially helped those men and women who had an NDE and did not know what to think of it, or how to accept it, or what to do about the associated transformational changes in life-insights and the loss of the fear of death." Also available in Kindle eBook Edition.

Coming Back To Life
Coming Back to Life: Examining the After-Effects of the Near-Death Experience (2008)

This book is the first book about the near-death phenomenon to look at all aspects of both the experience and its aftereffects - including the hellish experience, suicides, possible changes in brain structure and chemistry because of what happened, plus how the phenomenon really affects those who experience it - and compares all of this to what a person goes through after a transformation of consciousness, no matter how caused. This revised edition explores the after-effects using both research relative to case histories and the authors own near-death story. Chapter Two contains a brief description of P.M.H. Atwater's three near-death experiences and how she initially dealt with them. There is much praise for P.M.H. Atwater's book by NDE experts: "Anyone interested in the personality changes which affect persons with an NDE, and this includes relatives and friends of such persons, will find this very interesting reading ... compelling." -- Raymond E. Moody, Jr., M.D "An extraordinary piece of work ... There is nothing to equal it anywhere in the literature for sheer abundance of information, sensitivity, and readability. Atwater is one of the foremost authorities on the aftereffects of a near-death experience." -- Kenneth Ring, Ph.D. Also available in Kindle eBook Edition.

Beyond The Indigo Children
Beyond the Indigo Children: The New Children and the Coming of the Fifth World (2005)

Author P.M.H. Atwater illuminates the characteristics of the fifth root race, the capstone being the extraordinary "new children," those brilliant and irreverent kids born since 1982. She explores the relationship of the new children to the prophecies in the Mayan calendar and other traditions, providing extensive background information about the seven root races (the sixth and seventh of which haven't yet appeared) and the great shifting of consciousness already underway. "Beyond the Indigo Children" is the first major study of today's children, and their place in our rapidly changing world, that combines objective research with mystical revelation and prophecy. Praise for P.M.H. Atwater's book: Betty Maxwell, Associate Editor, Advanced Development Journal says about the book, "Takes the new children -- those often termed 'Indigos' and places them in a context whose scope boggles the mind. Weaving together metaphysics, legends, new physics, sociology, child development, gifted education, near-death experiences and transformations, Beyond The Indigo Children explains why such children are making waves on the planet and why this is happening now." Also available in Kindle eBook Edition.

We Live Forever
We Live Forever: The Real Truth About Death (2004)

Author P. M. H. Atwater was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, and died three times in Boise, Idaho. Since those experiences, she has traveled, studied, spoken and written about what happened to her and others when they died. Considered an authority on death, near death, and the afterlife, Atwater has written a book that gives details and deep insights into what really happens when you die and what it truly means. She also explores such mysteries as heaven and hell, the souls’ existence after death, the power of prayer, and delves into the truths and myths about death that may shed new light on the real truth about life and living. There is praise for her book: "P.M.H. Atwater - the renowned researcher of near-death experiences, future memory, and children of the new millennium -- has written her most personal book. This true story is rich in both philosophical insight and in emotional subtlety. It shows us the glorious beauty that lies hidden within even the most terrible tragedies. Perhaps the greatest recommendation I can offer is that this is a book written with care and tenderness by a loving heart." -- Jeffrey Mishlove, Ph.D., host of the "Thinking Allowed" television series, and author of many books. Also available inn Kindle eBook Edition.

The New Children and NDEs
The New Children and Near-Death Experiences (2003)

This is the first book to provide an in-depth study of children who have experienced the near-death phenomenon and its aftereffects. Atwater notes how child who returns from an NDE are not the same child as before, but are a "remodeled, rewired, reconfigured, refined version of the original." Presenting data to support her contention that these children have experienced structural, chemical, and functional changes in the brain, she also shows how their greater empathic abilities as well as dramatically higher intelligence are qualities that are also present in children born since 1982 - enhanced abilities that cannot be tied to simple genetics. Atwater shows that understanding the near-death experiences of children can help us prepare for a quantum leap in the evolution of humanity. There is much praise for P.M.H. Atwater's book: Kenneth Ring, Ph.D., co-author of Lessons from the Light, says: "This book is the richest, most probing, and most comprehensive available on NDEs in children, and a major contribution to the field of near-death studies. It is also a truly seminal exploration of the possible evolutionary significance of NDEs." Also available in Kindle eBook Edition.

Beyond The Light
Beyond the Light: The Mysteries and Revelations of Near-Death Experiences (2009)

One of the Bibles of the NDE, this is an in-depth study of adult experiencers of near-death states, based on sessions with over 3,000 adult experiencers. It is all original work. It includes a large Resource Section that is aimed at assisting experiencers learn how to integrate what happened to them. It also includes a special section on electrical sensitivity; several chapters on the full pattern of aftereffects, both physiological and psychological. From her own encounter with life-after-death and from interviews with hundreds of others, she presents this remarkable and reassuring vision into a world beyond the one we know: What it feels like to die; What awaits us after we see the light; Why many who are rescued from death don't want to come back; Why some people encounter hellish experiences; How life changes after an NDE. There is praise for P.M.H. Atwater's book: "Atwater's insights and predictions about the nature of the near-death experience came years before the hard medical research that backed them up. She is among this field's best researchers. She skillfully combines science, religion, metaphysics, and her own observations; synthesizing the entire field." -- Melvin Morse, M.D., author of Closer to the Light: Learning from the Near-Death Experiences of Children

Goddess Runes
Goddess Runes: A Comprehensive Guide to Casting and Divination With One of the Oldest Known Rune Sets (1996)

This comprehensive guide to the casting and divination of rune stones invites readers to explore the profound power of their own feminine inner wisdom and intuition. This book by P.M.H. Atwater clearly explains how to create and care for one's own set of runes, as well as how to cast, read, and interpret the stones. "Goddess Runes" are magic in the way they enable you to glimpse yourself and the living of life from another angle, an angle unfettered and free, filled with love and joy. To learn of them is to become as a child again, rediscovering the true magic of sacredness. All books currently written on runes are about oracle or yang runes and the masculine approach to rune use. Atwater is the first to write about the elder runes, which are used only for casting and are yin or of the feminine. These "group" runes are cast as a single unit, freely, without the need for either layout or format. Illustrative, they create picture patterns that stir the deepest recesses of our heart. P.M.H. Atwater will be available for "Rune Casting Playshops," so plan now to sponsor one. Contact her directly: e-mail:: atwater@cinemind.com or postal at P. O. This talk is an overview of the present energy pattern, pros and con, plus a reminder: the Age of Meaning returns to us the legitimacy and importance of the arts, spiritual technologies, and all things sacred and true. Quite literally, the unresolved issues, the unfinished business of the last 2,000 years is surfacing now. The quest at hand is a search for meaning. Making meaning will require all of us to step back, take a deep breath, and seek a different answer. Energy merges and diffuses in the sign of Pisces: borders, boundaries, laws, rules, even traditions lose definition. We must be the change we want to see happen, become the peace we seek, or we could be lost as well.
